The Ember & Flow Philosophy
“Your massage is unlike anything I've experienced before. What do you call your style?"
My usual answer is something like, "A medley of almost two decades of continuing education and learning from hands-on experience." And while that's true, it doesn't tell the whole story…
My approach has been shaped by experiences throughout my entire life.
Long before massage school, my first teachers were our family cats. They quietly showed me exactly where they wanted to be touched—and just as importantly, where they didn't. Looking back, they were teaching me one of the most valuable skills I use every day: the art of listening.
My Guiding Philosophy
Many years ago, a friend and I were in the depths of a deep, juicy conversation,
and an acronym emerged that has stayed with me ever since: P.A.L
Presence
Presence means offering my full attention to what is happening right now.
When I'm truly present with a trigger point, a fascial restriction, or an area of tension, I can continually adapt based on what your body is telling me. Presence creates space for something deeper than yet another massage routine...
Allow
Healing cannot be forced.
This is a lesson it seems we always learn the hard way: the harder we try to control something, the more resistance we run into.
When I allow your body to guide the session instead of imposing what I think it needs, your tissues often reveal a much more effective path forward. The path of allowing has taught me that gentle guidance frequently accomplishes more than force ever could.
Listen
Most people think listening only happens with our ears. I believe listening happens through our entire being.
Throughout every massage, there's an ongoing conversation between my hands and your body. I listen to what you tell me. I listen to how your tissues respond. I listen to the subtle changes that happen throughout the session. Those conversations shape every decision I make.
Why "Ember & Flow"?
For me, the name is personal.
I was conceived on the day Kīlauea began a new eruptive cycle in 1983 and born during another eruption nine months later. Since then, the volcano has continued its remarkable journey, and its rhythms have remained intertwined with my own story.
Ember represents what remains after we've let go of everything that no longer serves us.
It is also the beginning of something new. With breath, presence, and gentle encouragement, that small ember can grow into a vibrant fire of possibility.
That's how I see healing: Not something forced, but something invited.
Flow represents equally powerful ideas, all of which are found in the human body. Water, fascia, movement, energy, creativity, intuition, the entire nervous systesm — every structure in the body contains water, and I continue to be inspired by the incredible possibilities of how fascia and fluid movement influence the way we feel and move. When tissues soften and movement returns, new possibilities emerge: that's flow.
Together, Ember and Flow represent the balance that guides every session: releasing what no longer serves you while creating space for freer movement, greater ease, and new potential.
